On the first Sunday of Lent we celebrate the Rite of Election in which we express our affirmation of and prayerful support for those who have been preparing to enter the Catholic Church. Dating back to at least the fifth century, this election seems far removed from our divisive national electoral process, but as Christians we must live the connections.
During their baptism at the Easter vigil, our elect will be missioned to join all the baptized in sharing the three-fold mission of Christ: as priest, prophet and king. This obligation to offer prayer and sacrifice, to speak and live the truth and to exercise with justice and compassion whatever power we have, including the authority of voice and vote.During the season of Lent which calls us to strengthen our relationship with God and one another, may Mary, Seat of Wisdom, intercede for our nation and for us so that we may walk humbly and faithfully with God.
